Things To Do in Lowell MA

Things To Do

One of the great cities of Massachusetts, Lowell is one of two traditional seats of Middlesex County. It is part of the Boston metropolitan statistical area but also part of a smaller Massachusetts statistical area referred to as Greater Lowell. It was named after Francis Cabot Lowell, one of the local figures of the Industrial Revolution. It is located near the Merrimack River, 25 miles northwest of Boston.

Founded in the 1820s as a planned manufacturing center for textiles, it was incorporated in 1826 as a mill town with a large number of textile mills and factories. The town became known as the cradle of the American Industrial Revolution, diversifying into a full-fledged urban center over time. Most of the labor force that had helped grow the city were immigrants from Ireland, leading to Lowell becoming the largest industrial complex in the United States in the 1850s. By 1860, there were more cotton spindles in Lowell than in all eleven states combined that would become the Confederate States of America.

Many of the town’s historic manufacturing sites in later years became preserved by the National Park Service to create the sprawling Lowell National Historical Part. The area has a natural, long-standing tradition of boxing, hosting the annual New England Golden Gloves boxing tournament and other smaller spectacles throughout the year. Performing arts are alive and well, the City Hall is used for lectures, art exhibits, plays, and other cultural displays.
