Things To Do in Dunstable, MA

Things To Do

A town in Middlesex County, MA, Dunstable was named after is sister town Dunstable in Bedforshire, England. The sister town in England was the home of Edward Tyng, the town’s original first settler. Multiple theories abound as to how the name of Dunstable came about, but some say that it comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for “The boundary post of Duna” or that it is derived from Dunum, or Dun, a hill, as well as Staple, a marketplace.

The area was first settled by Europeans in 1656 and it wasn’t until 1673 that it was officially incorporated. It was originally a township of over two hundred square miles, which narrowed in later years to come. The northern part of Dunstable would eventually become present day Nashua in New Hampshire, the souther part remaining the Dunstable of today.

The town of Dunstable has held onto a distinctly rural character, featuring many points of interest that hold vital historical importance. The Little Red Schoolhouse is a historical building located near the Tyngsborough border where local students take field trips there irregularly to re-enact a school day from the 1700s, as well as an annual Strawberry Festival held around Mother’s Day. The Town Commons across from the Dunstable Town Hall is the site of multiple town events including the summertime “Concerts on the Common” live performance series as well as the Grange Fair in August.
